Metro Ends Season by Claiming National Junior Classic GOLD!

 

In their final tournament action of the year, Metro 18T Traveled to Chicago on Memorial Day Weekend to compete in the Sports Performance National Junior Classic.  Metro was seeded 8th in the tough 27-team field, which included 8 teams ranked in the Top 50 in the country, Including the USAV Open Champs!

 

Day One Summary

#24 Michigan Elite, W, 25-8, 21-25, 15-6

#25 E381 Kiri (Canada), W, 25-16, 25-15

#9 Nebraska Juniors 18-1, W, 25-22, 25-24

Notes – After an early second set hiccup against Michigan Elite, Metro rolled through day one, winning their net and advancing to the top half of the tournament.

Day Two Summary

#15 Premier 18 (Ohio), W, 25-16, 25-11

#10 Nebraska Juniors 18-2, W, 25-9, 25-20

#1 Sports Performance 18 Elite, W, 25-20, 25-19

Notes – Metro faced off on another 4-team pool on the second day, with the winner of the net advancing to the four-team Gold Bracket.  Metro easily rolled through their first two matches before facing off against host-team, #1 seed and #2 nationally ranked Sports Performance.  Metro jumped out early in the first set and held on late for a 25-20 win. Metro pulled away late in the second set to finish off the powerhouse, win the net and advance to Gold.

#3 Milwaukee Sting, W, 25-21, 18-25, 15-11

Notes – Metro came out firing on all cylinders the last day of the tournament, crushing Illini Elite 25-11 in set one.  Illini fought back in set two, but Metro held off the challenge for the straight set win and advanced to the Championship Match.  In the finals, Metro faced Milwaukee Sting, who finished third at USAV Open Nationals and knocked off Open National Champion MN Select in the other semi-final.  Metro jumped out early in the first set and held on for the win.  Sting came back strong to take the second set decisively.  The third set was back and forth until it was tied at 10-10.  Metro had two straight service aces and rolled off five of the last six points to claim the match and the Championship.  This was Metro’s sixth tournament win of the season and they finished with a match record of 70-11!

Notes - Metro 18T traveled to York to participate in the third and final Mid-Atlantic Power League tournament of the season.  Metro entered the tournament as the overall #1 seed in the 54-team Black Division.  Metro played two power-pool sessions on the first day and rolled through their four matches, including a match against Metro 16T, in straight sets.  Metro maintained their overall #1 seed as they moved into day two.

Notes – On Championship Day, Metro 18T rolled easily through their first 2 matches of the day before facing off against Metro 17T in the semi-finals.  Metro 18T jumped out early and dominated the first set, 25-14.  Metro 17T came back strong in set two and led Metro 18T 16-10, before Metro 18T rallied and closed them out 25-21.  In the Championship Match, Metro faced off against Ballyhoo 18 White out of Philadelphia.  Metro cruised through the first set for an easy 25-10 win.  Ballyhoo, playing in their final match of the season and in front of a raucous group of supporters, charged back and took the second set 25-18, sending the match to a decisive third set.  Metro fell behind in the third set 0-3, before rallying to tie the score at 4-4.  From there, it was a back and forth set until the teams were tied at 12-12.  Metro finished off the match with 2 kills and a Ballyhoo hitting error to win 15-12.  Metro 18-T won their fifth tournament of the season and improved their match record to 60-6.

Notes - Metro 18T traveled to Philadelphia for the Northeast East Qualifier, their third and final National Qualifier of the season.  Metro came into the tournament as the overall #1 seed out of 30 teams.  Metro rolled through their net on the first day, sweeping all three teams and maintained their #1 seed going into the second day.

Notes – Metro rolled through the first 2 matches of the day, assuring a spot in the Gold Bracket before dropping a 3-set match to Club V.  Metro dropped down to the #7 seed heading into the 8-team Gold finals.

Notes – Metro needed to win their 4-team gold net to advance to the championship match.  Metro fell just short, finishing the day second on their net.  Metro took third-place overall in the 30-team tournament and improved their record on the season to 52-6.

Notes - Metro 18T traveled to Raleigh to participate in the second Mid-Atlantic Power League tournament of the season.  Metro entered the tournament as the overall #1 seed in the 72-team top Black Division.  Metro played two power-pool sessions on the first day (the top 18 seeds play against each other in a power pool) and breezed through their four matches in straight sets.  Metro maintained their overall #1 seed as they moved into day two.

Notes – Metro 18T cruised through to the finals of MAPL Hampton before falling in a spirited three-set match against Metro 17T.  Metro 18T improved their match record to 45-4 as they head into their final National Qualifier of the season in Philadelphia.

Notes – Metro 18T entered a very tough Colorado Crossroads 18 Super Open Field as the 18th seed out of 48 teams.  The field included 22 nationally ranked teams (by PrepVolleyball) and 9 Top 20 teams (Metro was ranked #13 in PV’s most recent national rankings.)  Metro bounced back from an uneven first set loss to 303 VA to sweep the next 6 sets of the day, win their net and move up to the overall #7 seed going into day two.  Metro topped two nationally ranked teams – Absolute was ranked #53 nationally and Rockwood Thunder was #10 nationally, having started a strong season by earning a USAV 18 Open Division bid at Northern Lights and winning another national qualifier, the Beast of the Southeast.

Notes  - Metro started the day against #6 nationally ranked Laguna Beach VBC and needing to finish in the top two on the net to advance to Gold.  Metro dropped a tight three-setter to Laguna for their first match loss of the season.  Metro rebounded nicely and dominated NCVC 18-1 in straight sets.  Metro then squared off against unbeaten#6 seed Colorado Juniors, needing a win to keep their hopes for Gold alive.  Metro dropped a tight first set before coming back and dominating the second set.  Metro trailed in the third set 9-12 and was on the brink of getting knocked out of contention before rallying for a stunning 15-13 win.  That left 3 teams with identical match (2-1) and set records (5-3), and Metro claimed the “points” tie breaker to win the net and advance to the 12-Team Gold Pool!

Notes  - Metro dropped two highly competitive matches on the final day of the tournament and finished tied for ninth, an improvement over their #18 seed coming into the tournament.

Metro 18T Dominates Capitol Hill Classic
for Fourth Tournament Win in a Row!

Metro 18T took to the courts on President’s Day Weekend to defend their championship in the Capitol Hill Classic.  Metro entered the 64-team 18 Open Division as the #1 overall seed.

On Saturday, Metro sailed through undefeated.  In their opening match, Metro swept MVA 18-1 (Baltimore), 25-13, 25-18.  Metro then faced Voltage DDU 18-1 (Alexandria) and claimed a 25-13, 25-10 sweep.  Metro finished the day with a sweep of NV Premier 18-1 25-14, 25-6.

Metro began Sunday as the #1 seed in Group 1 which consisted of the Top 32 teams from Saturday.  Metro faced Sportime 18 Gold (Long Island, NY) in their first match and swept 25-20, 25-10.  As the crowds around their court continued to build, Metro took out NYC Juniors 18 National 25-12, 25-18 and then in their final match of the day, Metro swept MVSA 18 Storm 25-12, 25-23 to advance to the 16-team Gold Bracket as the #1 seed.

Metro began Championship Day with a sweep of Revolution South 18 White (Chambersburg, PA) 25-9, 25-13.  Metro moved into the quarterfinals and swept AVA 18-Black Rox 25-12, 25-18.  In the semi-finals, Metro faced off against Academy 18 Red (Long Island, NY) and pulled away for an easy first set win 25-17.  In the second set, Academy rallied behind the energy of a huge, vocal crowd and took a 23-18 lead.  Metro dug deep, had a key serving run to knot the score at 23 and pulled out the 26-24 set and match win.  Metro was matched against NVVA 18 Ice Elite in the finals and the first set was tight at 16-14, before Metro pulled away for a dominating 25-15, 25-14 championship win!

Metro has now won all four of the tournaments they have entered and own a 33-0 match record.  They have won 37 consecutive sets.

Metro 18T Storms Atlanta, Returns Home with Open Bid and Two New Ball Carts!!

Metro 18T traveled to Atlanta on MLK Weekend for Lil’ Big South, their first National Qualifier of the season.  Metro came into the one-bid tournament seeded 8th out of 12 teams.

 Metro 18T started day one against the #2 overall seed, Top Select 18-1 out of Orlando, Florida.  Top Select trailed the entire first set, but down 24-21 reeled off 5 straight points to take the first set 26-24.  Metro responded to win the next 2 sets (25-16, 15-8) and the match.  In their second match of the day against #5 overall seed Tsunami 18-KJ (Atlanta), Metro once again dropped the first-set after leading most of the way 23-25, but again responded with second and third set wins (25-15, 15-7).  In their final match of the day, Metro cruised past another Florida Club, OVA/TBVA 18 Asics Blue 25-12, 25-12 to finish the day 3-0, win their net and move up to the overall #2 seed going into day two.

Metro 18T rolled on day two!  Metro won all 3 matches in straight sets and in dominating fashion.  In order, Metro took down A5 18-1 (Atlanta) (25-20, 25-17), Memphis Juniors 18-1 (25-10, 25-14) and then undefeated Tampa United 18 (25-13, 25-12).  By winning their net, Metro advanced to the four-team Gold Pool on Monday.  At the end of the morning wave, a serving contest was held for the coaches, with Coach Silvia and Coach Corey participating.  With the team cheering them on, they both served balls into ball carts on the other side of the net, and each won a ball cart as their prize!

In their first match of the Gold Pool, Metro faced a rematch against their first opponent of the tournament, Top Select 18-1.  Metro broke open a tight first set late and claimed a 25-18 win.  In a hard fought second set, Top Select had set point at 25-24, before Metro rolled off three-straight, finishing the set with a booming kill on an overpass to close out the match 27-25.  Metro then faced Tampa United in another rematch.  Metro took the first set easily at 25-14, but Tampa stormed back with a 25-15 second set win.  In the decisive third set, Tampa jumped out to a 6-2 lead before Metro caught fire and closed them out 15-9.  That win set up a “winner take all” final match featuring the two remaining undefeated teams, Metro and Upward Stars (both 8-0), with the tournament championship and an USAV Open Nationals bid at stake.  In the first set of the finals, Metro took control mid-way through and won 25-19.  In the second set, Upward started strong and led 23-13, before a late serving run closed the gap, but Upward held-on for the 25-19 win.  In a dramatic and thrilling third-set, Metro trailed most of the way down 6-10 and then 12-14 before fighting off 2 match points to claim a 16-14 win on a stuff block at match point.  Metro took the championship and earned a much- coveted bid to compete in the USAV Open Division Championship in Milwaukee in late April.

Metro 18T Future Schools

Metro 18T Wins Gold Championship at Inaugural NVPL Tournament

Metro 18T took the court for their first tournament action on the season in the inaugural Northern Virginia Power League (NVPL) Open Seeding Tournament.  Metro 18T was seeded first in the fourteen team event.  On the first day of action, Metro overwhelmed their younger opponents and cruised to a 3-0 record, defeating American 17 (25-9, 25-9), Virginia Fusion 17 (25-9, 25-8) and No Panic 17 (25-11, 25-12).

Day two began with a Gold quarter-final match against NVVA 17/18-Select which Metro swept 25-8, 25-14.  Metro was matched up against #4 seed NVVA 17 ICE Elite in the semi-finals and cruised with a 25-13, 25-16 sweep.  Metro faced Dulles 18 in the finals and raced out to a first set win 25-14.  Dulles fought back in set two, closing the score to 23-22, before Metro finished out the match with a booming kill and then forced a Dulles hitting error for the 25-22 win and the Gold Championship.

Metro 18T finished the tournament 6-0 (12-0 in sets).

Metro 18T traveled to Hampton to play in the first of three Mid-Atlantic Power League tournaments.  Metro came into the 66-team Black (Top) Division as the #1 over-all seed. On Saturday, Metro began play as part of “Group 1” – a group of the top 18 seeds

Metro 18T traveled to Hampton to play in the first of three Mid-Atlantic Power League tournaments.  Metro came into the 66-team Black (Top) Division as the #1 over-all seed.

On Saturday, Metro began play as part of “Group 1” – a group of the top 18 seeds in the tournament that were split off from the rest of the competition.  Metro faced-off against #14 seed RVC 17 Nationals in their first match and held-off a tough challenge, 25-19, 25-21.  In match two, Metro steamrolled #12 seed NC Elite 17 Black, 25-14, 25-7.  Metro returned to the courts Saturday afternoon and delivered two more straight set wins, over  #9 EC Power 17-Steel, 25-18, 25-13 and #7 Beach Elite 18, 25-20, 25-13.

Metro began Sunday in a Gold Bracket Challenge Match, with the winner advancing to the Gold Bracket and the loser relegated to the Silver Bracket.  Metro faced #16 Ballyhoo 18 White and swept them 25-19, 25-18 advancing to the 8-team Gold Bracket as the #1 seed.  In the quarterfinals, Metro faced off against defending champion and #8 seed Coastal 18 Blue.  Metro jumped out to a big lead in set one, 20-11, and then held off a furious Coastal rally to win 25-23.  In set 2, Metro led most of the way and claimed the 25-21 set and match win.  In the semi-finals, Metro took-on #4 seed and undefeated Triangle 18 Black.  Metro led most of the first set, but Triangle closed the score to 23-22, before Metro captured the next two points with a kill and an ace to claim the first set.  Metro claimed an easy second- set win 25-16.  That win set-up a “Metro Show-Down” Championship Match against the #2 seed, the very talented and highly regarded Metro 17T.  Both sets were even mid-way through, until 18T pulled away late for the 25-16, 25-17 straight-set championship win.  Metro 18T has won all three of their tournaments this season and has a match record of 23-0.
