Angel Rivera- 12 North Head Coach & 16/15 North Head Coach 2021

 
 
Angel is returning to Metro after being overseas for three years as head coach of Metro 12 North. This will be his third year as the head coach of 12 North. 
 
He has coached for All Army Men’s Volleyball Team and U.S. Armed Forces team since 2011 utill present - Coach Angel led the All-Army men's volleyball team and achieved a 23-1 record during the 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 Armed Forces Championships. As a U.S. Armed Forces head coach, he represented the United States during the 2011 World Peace Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2012 during Conseil International du Sport Militaire Volleyball Championships in Amsterdam, Netherlands and in 2013 and 2014 during the USA Volleyball Open National Championships. Coach Angel was named 2012 Army Coach of the Year after successfully leading his men's volleyball team to a perfect record during the 2011 and 2012 season.
 
Coach Angel has coached youth volleyball at Club Vaqueros de Bayamon Puerto Rico, Areyto Volleyball, Club Synergy Wisconsin and Northern Virginia Volleyball Association - coaching at age groups 18’s open, 17’s open, 16’s open, 13’s open and 12’s club. During the 2010-11, 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, he coached teams including Metro 12's North and won the Club Regional. Coach Angel is also the Head Coach of the Junior Varsity team for South Lakes High School and Assistant Coach for the Varsity Team.
 
He believes that teaching young athletes solid fundamental skills is the key to future success. Understanding that young players continually progress and develop at differing rates, it is important to create a love, respect, fundamental understanding and enjoyment of the game. Part of coaching volleyball is to help young athletes understand the connection between practice ethics and success on the court and how they relate to life skills.

Coach Angel began playing in 8th grade and played four years of Varsity volleyball in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, earning the National Scholar/ Athlete Award. In college he played for the Interamerican University San German Campus LIDE league. After college, he joined the Army, and while stationed in South Korea his team achieved two Area IV championships and two 8th Army championships. Coach Angel assisted at volleyball clubs in the West Coast area in Puerto Rico from 2002 to 2006. When not coaching, he plays in various adult leagues.

He is a member of USAV, is IMPACT certified, has attended numerous coaching clinics, including Gold Medal Squared, The Art of Coaching Volleyball, George Mason, he is also CAP I and is working on his CAP II certification.
